7 Bespoke Rings and Their Stories

The thing I love the most about creating a bespoke piece of jewellery is the story and meaning behind each unique creation. This year seems to have been the year of the ring and I love that each of these ring commissions shows there doesn’t need to be the excuse of an engagement or wedding to create a bespoke ring that will be treasured for years or even generations to come.

Rather than leaving an inherited ring gathering dust in a box it can feel really empowering to re-work the design into something you love and will wear. I always work closely with my customer to make sure we take the essence and sentiment of the original piece and build on its story. Read on to discover the stories behind some of my recent ring commissions.

Diamond and Sapphire Ring

Catherine Hills Jewellery commission ring - diamond and sapphire

A special diamond and sapphire ring for a combined 21st and graduation present. It was inspired by an image of a vintage ring my customer had fallen in love with – but she wanted something more modern and personal.

Personalised Cobra Ring

Catherine Hills Jewellery Commissions - cobra diamond ring

This commission was for a lovely couple using three brilliant cut diamonds from an old unworn ring. They’ve bought my work before and wanted a design that was bold but not too chunky. It’s finished using my signature bobble texture.

Bespoke Birthday Ring

Catherine Hills Jewellery Commission - diamond and tourmaline couplet ring

This ring was made as a special 21st birthday present using an old family diamond. The diamond is set next to a small green tourmaline to represent her much loved, cherished and hugely missed older brother whose birthday was in October.

Unique Amethyst Ring

Catherine Hills Jewellery Commission - amethyst ring

A customer asked me to create a new ring to showcase this gorgeous, large, deep purple amethyst from an old ring of her granny’s. We also added lots of little mixed size diamonds on the shoulders taken from other bits of old family jewellery – the end result is eye-catching and very dramatic.

Trio Diamond Ring Commission

Catherine Hills Jewellery Commission - triple diamond ring

It’s such a wonderful feeling to know something you’ve created has becomes a treasured possession. This upcycled ring uses diamonds and old gold from the customer’s mother’s jewellery. She now wears it every day to remind her of her mother.

Personalised Diamond Ring

Catherine Hills Jewellery Commission - diamond ring

One of my all-time favourite commissions. A customer’s beautiful large princess cut diamond from the centre of her late mother’s ring, set in 18ct yellow gold with my signature oxidised silver spotted band. The reason I like it so much is the contrast between the yellow gold and oxidised silver. Using a big diamond can often look too bling but I love the combination with this textured band, which is unconventional yet hugely wearable for every day.

Bobbled Stacking Rings in Shades of Blue

Catherine Hills Jewellery Commission - set 4 gemstone stacking rings

This was such a lovely commission to make – I’ve always loved combining different shades of the same colour. It’s my Bobbled Stacking ring set made with the customer’s favourite blue stones – aquamarine, tanzanite, sapphire and tourmaline.
